The Story
Ruth, a long-time collector of Cielomar Jewelry from my native country of Puerto Rico, reached out looking to design new rings for her milestone wedding anniversary—25 years! After Ruth filled out her Custom Jewelry Inquiry Form, we hopped on a Zoom video call so we could collaborate from California all the way to Puerto Rico to brainstorm her custom jewelry design concept. For her ring, Ruth envisioned an elongated featured stone, elegantly prong-set in 14k gold.
I absolutely adored getting to know her better during our evening Zoom calls, and the magical sounds of the coquís in the background made me feel right at home!
Ruth was so excited to design her very first custom jewelry piece and decided she wanted to have a ring created for her husband, as well. We connected again via Zoom, where I was able to meet with Ruth’s husband, Eugenio, to discuss his desired band width and choose a design direction.
The Design Process
After completing our initial custom jewelry design consultation, I shipped them both ring sizers—one in 2MM width for Ruth and a 6MM width for Eugenio. Sending both options is crucial, since a person’s ring size varies depending on the width of the ring. You will be a smaller size with thinner rings since they are easier to put on and slide over the knuckle, whereas you may need to size up on wider rings since they occupy more space on the finger and tend to be tighter around the knuckles.
I sourced just the perfect emerald cut, lab-grown diamond for Ruth’s piece, which fit flawlessly with the band width we discussed to fit her lifestyle and provide everyday comfort. We also looked at font options, since they knew they wanted to feature a special engraving inside each ring. They decided on MT Bold Script for their inscriptions, a classic calligraphy to complement the timelessness of their custom pieces.
The Final Piece
Ruth’s ring turned out beautifully. The emerald cut diamond sparkled brilliantly against the classic yellow gold of her delicate, tapered 2MM band, with a hidden engraving of “Rosa Roja” (Red Rose)—the name Eugenio used for her when writing her love letters during their courtship.
Eugenio decided on a simple, sophisticated knife-edge 6MM band in matching 14k yellow gold, with a hidden inscription of “El Soñador” (The Dreamer), the pen name he used when writing his letters to Ruth all those years—a daily reminder of their love story. It doesn’t get any sweeter than this!
The rings were mailed out and insured via USPS the next day, and Ruth surprised Eugenio by secretly showcasing them on their dinner table when he arrived home that evening. They absolutely loved their rings, both classic pieces as timeless and eternal as their love letters. “La Rosa Roja” and “El Soñador” re-declared their love and celebrated a very memorable 25th anniversary in an intimate family gathering, with the sound of coquís singing in the background.
